Desalination Plant Alloy Scrap

Source industry

Quick Answer

Desalination plants use 254 SMO, super duplex and titanium for seawater intake, high-pressure reverse-osmosis piping and evaporator tubing. Rebuilds and plant upgrades release this material in large, clean lots.

Background

Why Desalination Uses Nickel Alloys

Desalination plants pump hot, concentrated seawater at high pressure, one of the most aggressive environments for pitting and crevice corrosion. That is why they use 6% molybdenum stainless, super duplex and titanium.

Scrap is released at plant upgrades and rebuilds, when high-pressure piping, pump casings and evaporator tube bundles are replaced.

Standards

Standards Behind This Scrap

Desalination plant uses titanium tube to ASTM B338, super duplex and 254 SMO pipe and plate to ASTM A790, A312 and A240, and duplex forgings to A182 (F51, F53, F55).

Things to Know

Note

Desalination is concentrated in the Gulf, which makes the Middle East a major source of super duplex and titanium tube scrap.

Questions

FAQ

Which alloys come out of desalination plants?

Mainly super duplex, 254 SMO and titanium, plus copper-nickel tube from older thermal plants.

Are desalination scrap lots usually clean?

Generally yes. The alloys are used in water service, so lots are usually free of process residues, although scale and marine deposits should be removed.
