Oil and Gas Nickel Alloy Scrap

Source industry

Quick Answer

Oil and gas is the largest source of corrosion-resistant nickel alloy scrap: Inconel 625 clad and solid pipe, Incoloy 825 tubulars, Inconel 718 and 925 downhole parts, Monel K-500 tools and duplex piping. Decommissioning and shutdowns release it in large volumes.

Background

Why Oil and Gas Uses Nickel Alloys

Oil and gas equipment faces hydrogen sulfide, chlorides, carbon dioxide and seawater at high pressure. Nickel alloys and duplex steels resist the resulting corrosion and cracking where carbon steel would fail.

Scrap is released at plant turnarounds, platform and pipeline decommissioning, and from machining of downhole tools and wellhead parts.

Standards

Standards Behind This Scrap

Sour-service equipment is governed by NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156, and alloy 718 and 925 components are often supplied to API 6A718 and API 6ACRA. Line pipe, clad pipe and process piping are usually ASTM/ASME: B444 and B705 for 625, B423 for 825, A790 and A928 for duplex.

Things to Know

Note

Clad and weld-overlaid pipe is common in this industry and must be declared: its alloy content is a small share of its weight.

Questions

FAQ

What happens to nickel alloys when an offshore platform is decommissioned?

Topsides and subsea equipment are cleaned, cut and sorted onshore. Nickel alloy and duplex piping is segregated from carbon steel and sold by grade.

Is sour-service scrap safe to handle?

Once it has been cleaned and decontaminated, yes. Material from sour service must be free of residues before it is shipped, and many buyers ask for a written declaration.
