Power Generation Nickel Alloy Scrap
Source industry
Power plants generate nickel alloy scrap at scheduled gas turbine outages, when buckets, nozzles, combustion liners and transition pieces are replaced. Typical grades are GTD-111, GTD-222, René 80, Haynes 230, Nimonic C-263 and Inconel 617.
Background
Why Power Generation Uses Nickel Alloys
Gas turbines in power plants run hot for long hours at steady load, and steam and cooling systems face water and corrosion. Superalloys handle the turbine; titanium and nickel-copper alloys handle condensers and heaters.
Scrap comes in large, predictable batches at scheduled outages, and in smaller amounts from repair shops that strip and refurbish turbine parts.

| GTD-222 | Second- and third-stage turbine nozzles (vanes) |
| René 80 | Turbine blades (buckets) and vanes |
| Haynes 230 | Gas turbine combustors and transition ducts |
| Nimonic C-263 | Combustion chambers and transition liners |
| Inconel 617 | Gas turbine combustion cans and transition ducts |
| Inconel 706 | Land-based gas turbine discs, wheels and spacers |
| Titanium Grade 2 | Condenser and heat exchanger tubes |
Standards
Standards Behind This Scrap
Boilers, heat-recovery steam generators and heat exchangers are built to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, so tube and plate from power plants is often dual-marked ASTM/ASME, such as SB-163 heat-exchanger tube or SB-338 titanium condenser tube. Gas turbine hot-section parts follow the turbine maker’s own specifications.

Things to Know
Outage scrap arrives in large, predictable batches. Planning the sale before the outage usually gets the best result.
Questions
FAQ
When does a power plant generate turbine scrap?
At combustion inspections, hot-gas-path inspections and major overhauls, when parts that have reached their repair limits are replaced.
Is repaired turbine scrap different from new?
Repaired parts can contain weld repairs and braze with different filler alloys. Record repaired parts separately so a melter can account for the filler.
