Inconel 600 Scrap Buyer, Importer and Exporter

UNS N06600, Solid-solution nickel-chromium-iron. Also traded as Alloy 600

Quick Answer

Inconel 600 (UNS N06600, Werkstoff 2.4816) is the plain nickel-chromium-iron Inconel: about 76% nickel, 15.5% chromium and 8% iron, with no molybdenum or niobium. Its scrap comes from furnace and heat-treatment rebuilds, caustic and chemical plant shutdowns, and exchanger and steam generator replacements. Mipra Steel in Mumbai buys, sells, imports and exports Inconel 600 scrap and turnings.

Sell Inconel 600 Scrap

If you are clearing retired furnace fixtures, evaporator plate or machining turnings, tell us roughly how much there is and which of those it is. Photographs that show scale, welds and any attached frames save a lot of back-and-forth. Readings on a few pieces, or certificates quoting N06600, help confirm the grade. Say where the material is stored and whether anything came from a nuclear site. We review incoming enquiries and respond with relevant next steps.

Melt shops and wire makers sourcing 600 as a high-nickel charge should state the tonnage, the forms they accept, the residual limits that matter to them (molybdenum, niobium, chromium spread) and the delivery port. Lots are offered with a grade and UNS description; tell us early which documents your quality team needs to see.

What Counts as Inconel 600 Scrap, and Why Do Melt Shops Want It?

Alloy 600 was the first Inconel, and for decades it was the default answer to two problems: metal that had to survive red heat without scaling away, and vessels that had to hold hot caustic soda without cracking. Nothing exotic does the work. A high nickel base carries the caustic resistance, around 15.5% chromium handles oxidation, and roughly 8% iron keeps the cost down. There is no age-hardening addition, so it is used annealed and welds without fuss.

For a scrap buyer, that simple recipe is the point. Ask a furnace hand, a chemical plant engineer and a nuclear maintenance planner where 600 lives in their plant and you get three different answers, so it reaches the market from very different directions. A 600 lot is mostly nickel, and few other wrought nickel grades carry as much of it: roughly three quarters of the weight. Melt shops making 600 itself, other nickel-chromium grades or nickel-base welding consumables can charge it as a high-nickel unit with clean, predictable residuals. What they do not want is a surprise. A few pieces of Inconel 625 bring molybdenum and niobium into a melt that was not designed for them, and a bundle of Inconel 690 almost doubles the chromium.

Traders call it Alloy 600, Inco 600, NA14 in older British usage, or just "600". Filler wire to ERNiCr-3, sold as filler 82, is the usual match for welding 600, and its wire ends normally sort with 600 scrap after a reading. Do not confuse it with Incoloy grades: an "Incoloy 600" label on a lot is a naming error, and the material should be confirmed by analysis before it is described.

Inconel 600 belongs to the Inconel family, part of nickel alloy scrap.

Where Inconel 600 Scrap Actually Turns Up

Inconel 600 enters the scrap stream from plants that rarely talk to each other. Each source has its own habits, and each leaves its own kind of contamination.

Heat-Treatment and Furnace Shops

Muffles, retorts, fixtures and baskets are retired when they distort or crack. They arrive scaled and sometimes carburised, and often bolted to stainless or carbon-steel frames that must come off first. See furnace and heat-treatment scrap.

Caustic Soda and Chemical Plants

Chlor-alkali evaporators, concentrators and process vessels are rebuilt at planned shutdowns, releasing plate, formed heads and machined parts. Residue must be washed off before weighing. See chemical plant scrap.

Steam Generator and Exchanger Replacement

Older pressurised-water reactors used 600 for steam generator tubing, and conventional exchangers use it too. Anything from a nuclear site moves only with radiological clearance documents. See nuclear plant scrap.

Heating Element and Thermocouple Makers

Sheath offcuts and rejects from mineral-insulated elements and thermocouples are mostly 600. They contain magnesium oxide powder and inner conductors, so they are a separate, lower-yielding lot.

Machine Shops

Flanges, fittings and forged parts machined from 600 bar produce turnings, usually wet with coolant.

Food Equipment Fabricators

Offcuts and sheet trim from food-processing equipment are typically clean and well documented.

How Inconel 600 Scrap Is Identified

A 600 reading is defined as much by what is missing as by what is there. The quick checks below are the ones a buyer runs on every piece before calling a lot 600.

CheckWhat it shows for Inconel 600
Chromium near 15.5%A reading close to 29% is Inconel 690; around 23% with 14% iron points to Inconel 601.
Molybdenum and niobium near zeroAny meaningful molybdenum or niobium means the piece is not 600. Nine per cent molybdenum with niobium is 625.
Iron around 8%Iron in the 30% to 45% range suggests an Incoloy grade. Iron above 50% means heat-resistant stainless, which is kept out of the lot entirely.
Titanium and aluminium lowNimonic 75 looks similar on chromium but carries a little titanium; precipitation-hardened grades show more titanium, aluminium or niobium.
Magnet600 should not pull a magnet at room temperature. A strong pull is carbon steel, an attachment or a ferritic stainless piece. See magnet testing scrap.
PaperworkMill certificates quoting N06600 or 2.4816, or ASTM B166, B167 or B168, let a buyer accept the description with confidence. See reading mill test certificates.

Grades Most Often Confused with Inconel 600

  • Inconel 690: looks and handles the same and is used in the same nuclear plant, but reads about 29% chromium against 15.5%.
  • Inconel 601: carries about 23% chromium, 14% iron and 1.4% aluminium, so its nickel is roughly 15 points lower.
  • Nimonic 75: is close in nickel but has around 20% chromium, lower iron and a small titanium addition.

Preparing Inconel 600 Scrap for Sale

  1. Unbolt stainless and carbon-steel frames from furnace fixtures before weighing.
  2. Read every piece if 690 or 601 was ever used in the same plant.
  3. Knock off loose scale and refractory; do not wash scaled parts into wet lots.
  4. Keep mineral-insulated sheath offcuts in their own labelled bag.
  5. Rinse caustic or process residue off chemical plant parts and let them dry.
  6. Keep radiological clearance papers with any material from nuclear sites.

Inconel 600 Scrap Price per Kg: What Decides It

An Inconel 600 scrap price per kg follows contained nickel more closely than any other common Inconel, because nickel is almost the whole story. What moves the offer from there is mostly about how clean and how certain the lot is.

  • Nickel content: at about 76%, nickel sets the base. Chromium adds little and there is no molybdenum, niobium or cobalt to lift the offer.
  • Separation from 690 and 601: a mixed 600/690 lot cannot be charged as either grade, so it is priced as a nickel-chromium mixture.
  • Scale and carburisation on furnace parts: heavy oxide is lost weight in the melt, and carburised sections add carbon a melt shop has to remove.
  • Attachments: stainless frames, carbon-steel bolts, refractory and ceramic insulation all have to be removed and are deducted if they are not.
  • Form: clean plate and bar solids attract more interest than turnings, and sheathed element offcuts with magnesium oxide filling sit well below either.
  • Origin and paperwork: material from nuclear sites needs a clearance trail, and chemical plant parts need to be free of process residue.

Because the offer tracks nickel so closely, it changes whenever the nickel market changes. For how a buyer builds the number, see what decides nickel alloy scrap value, or run the weights through the contained metal calculator.

Inconel 600 Scrap Import and Export

Importing Inconel 600 Scrap into India

Older heat-treatment lines and chemical plants in Europe, the Gulf and East Asia release 600 regularly, and much of it is scaled furnace hardware. Indian buyers should ask for readings, because a scaled surface hides the grade until it is ground. Imported metal scrap is inspected before loading and is accompanied by a pre-shipment inspection certificate, commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading. Most nickel alloy scrap lands at Nhava Sheva or Mundra, with Chennai serving southern buyers. Material that was ever inside a nuclear facility needs its clearance papers in the file before anyone books freight. More detail is in importing nickel alloy scrap into India.

Exporting Inconel 600 Scrap from India

India produces 600 scrap from chemical plant maintenance, food equipment fabrication and machine shops, much of it clean and single-grade. Export lots are described as Inconel 600, UNS N06600, on the invoice and packing list, weighed, and shipped in bags, drums or loose in containers. Buyers in Europe and East Asia generally want readings per lot. Our offices in the UAE and South Korea help with Gulf and East Asian enquiries, and Italy and Japan are among the countries we serve.

Inconel 600 Scrap FAQ

Is Inconel 600 magnetic?

No, not at room temperature. A piece of genuine 600 will not hold a magnet, so a strong pull means carbon steel, a ferritic stainless part or a bolted attachment. A magnet only tells you something is wrong; it cannot confirm 600, because most nickel alloys are non-magnetic too.

What is the difference between Inconel 600 and 601 scrap?

601 has more chromium (about 23% against 15.5%), much more iron (about 14% against 8%) and 1.4% aluminium. That leaves 601 with roughly 15 points less nickel, so a buyer treats them as two separate grades. See Inconel 600 vs 601.

Why do buyers worry about 690 in a 600 lot?

Because the two look identical and were often used side by side in steam generators and exchangers. A 690 piece carries about 29% chromium, close to double the 15.5% in 600, so even a small share shifts the melt chemistry. Readings on every piece are the only reliable way to keep them apart.

Can old furnace retorts and muffles be sold as Inconel 600 scrap?

Yes, once attachments and loose refractory are removed. Expect the offer to reflect scale loss and any carburisation from service in carbon-rich atmospheres. A reading on ground metal, rather than on the scale, confirms the grade.

Are thermocouple and heating element sheath offcuts worth anything?

They are, but less than solid 600. The sheath is usually 600, while the inside holds magnesium oxide powder and conductor wires that add weight without adding nickel. Keep them in a separate bag and describe them honestly.

Which HS code covers Inconel 600 scrap?

Being nickel-base, Inconel 600 scrap is typically declared under heading 7503.00, nickel waste and scrap. Each country adds its own digits to the national line, so check the full code with your customs broker before shipping.

How do I start selling Inconel 600 scrap to Mipra Steel?

Send the estimated weight, the form (furnace parts, plate, turnings or sheath offcuts), the location and photographs through the sell scrap page. Readings or certificates help, and the more detail you send, the quicker a clear answer comes back.

What is Inconel 600 made of?

Nominally 76% nickel, 15.5% chromium, 8% iron, 0.5% manganese. Specification ranges vary by product form and standard.
