What Is Monel 400 Scrap, and Who Melts It?

Two metals make up almost all of Monel 400: nickel at about two-thirds and copper at about a third. There is no chromium in it at all. That makes it the odd one out among the high nickel alloys, and it is also why a 400 lot has a narrower set of buyers than an Inconel or Hastelloy lot. A melt shop producing nickel-chromium grades treats copper as a contaminant, so Monel 400 scrap goes to people who want both metals: producers of nickel-copper alloys, makers of nickel-copper welding consumables, and foundries pouring nickel-copper castings for pumps and valves.

On the plant side, Monel 400 earns its place where seawater, brine, hydrofluoric acid or caustic would attack steel. Refinery HF alkylation units, crude distillation overheads, feedwater heaters and seawater valve bodies are typical homes. When those systems are rebuilt or a ship is broken up, the alloy comes back as valve bodies, pump parts, fittings, plate, bar ends and machining swarf.

The trouble with 400 is not identification of the family; a reading of about 31% copper with zero chromium narrows things quickly. The trouble is the near neighbours. Monel K-500 has the same nickel-copper base, and 70/30 cupronickel from condensers sits in the same ship and the same seawater system. Both end up in 400 lots far more often than they should. The Monel scrap family page covers the group as a whole; this page stays with 400.

Monel is a trademark of the Special Metals group. Here the name simply describes scrap of Alloy 400.

Where Monel 400 Scrap Turns Up

Monel 400 follows salt water and hydrofluoric acid. These are the places it leaves service.

Ship Recycling

Sea chests, seawater valves, strainers, pump casings and shaft sleeves in 400 come out of breaking yards mixed with bronze, cupronickel and steel. See marine and shipbuilding scrap.

Refinery Turnarounds

HF alkylation units and crude overhead systems release valves, vessel linings, fittings and exchanger parts. The plant decontaminates items from acid service before they leave site. See oil and gas scrap.

Heat Exchangers and Feedwater Heaters

Retubing releases condenser and exchanger tube to ASTM B163 and tube sheets. Expect the tubes to be cut, and expect some brass or cupronickel bundles from the same unit.

Desalination and Seawater Cooling

Pump and valve internals replaced during plant upgrades. See desalination scrap.

Machine Shops

Valve trim, fittings and fasteners turned from B164 bar leave Monel turnings and bar ends.

How Monel 400 Scrap Is Identified

With Monel 400 the first reading tells you the family. The next three tell you whether the lot is really 400.

CheckWhat it shows for Monel 400
Copper with no chromiumAbout 31% copper and nil chromium. Any chromium means a different alloy, or a plated or overlaid part.
Nickel above copperNickel near 66% against copper near 31.5% is Monel. If copper is higher than nickel, the piece is cupronickel and belongs in copper scrap.
Aluminium and titaniumShould be very low. About 2.7% aluminium and 0.6% titanium means Monel K-500. Aluminium is a light element that many handheld guns miss, so confirm it by OES or a helium-purged XRF. See XRF, OES and lab analysis.
MagnetNot a reliable test. Alloy 400 changes magnetic behaviour within a few degrees of normal shed temperatures, so a piece may pull weakly on a cold morning and not at all in a warm shed. Read why magnet sorting misleads.
Weld depositsRepaired valve bodies may carry nickel-copper filler such as ERNiCu-7, which is close to 400 chemistry, but overlays of other alloys show up as chromium on one face.
MarkingsHeat numbers and certificates to ASTM B127, B164, B165, B564 or QQ-N-281 identify 400 stock.

Grades Most Often Confused with Monel 400

  • Monel K-500: reads almost the same nickel and copper, but carries about 2.7% aluminium and 0.6% titanium.
  • 70/30 cupronickel: is roughly 70% copper and 30% nickel, the reverse of Monel, and is copper scrap.

Preparing Monel 400 Scrap for Sale

  1. Sort out every cupronickel tube, bronze impeller and brass fitting before weighing.
  2. Keep K-500 shafts and springs in their own bag, even when only a few pieces are present.
  3. Cut heat exchanger tube and clear sludge or scale from inside.
  4. Hold acid-service parts aside until the plant clearance is on file.
  5. Bag turnings separately, drained and dry.

Monel 400 Scrap Price per Kg: What Decides It

Two exchange prices sit under any Monel 400 scrap price per kg, not one. Nickel carries most of the value, copper adds to it, and the state of the heap sets how much of that is actually paid.

  • Contained nickel at about 66%, the main driver of any offer.
  • Copper at about 31.5%, which adds value only when the buyer melts nickel-copper alloys; to a nickel-chromium melter it is a penalty.
  • Freedom from cupronickel and bronze: a few copper-base pieces pull the nickel figure down and the buyer prices the whole lot for that risk.
  • Separation from K-500: aluminium and titanium are unwelcome in a 400 melt, so a mixed lot is usually bought at the lower description.
  • Form: heavy valve bodies and plate are worth more per kg than oily turnings or thin cut tube with fouling inside.
  • Decontamination records for parts from hydrofluoric acid service, which buyers and shippers ask to see.

Both nickel and copper move every trading day, so any figure you are given carries a date. Our guide to nickel alloy scrap value walks through the method.

Monel 400 Scrap Import and Export

Importing Monel 400 Scrap into India

Much of the 400 that moves internationally comes from ship recycling and refinery work in the Gulf, Europe and East Asia. Importing it into India follows the usual metal scrap route: a pre-shipment inspection certificate issued at origin, then the bill of lading, invoice and packing list, with arrival typically at Nhava Sheva or Mundra, or Chennai for buyers in the south. Describe the cargo as nickel-copper alloy scrap, Monel 400, so it is not confused with copper scrap at assessment. See importing nickel alloy scrap into India.

Exporting Monel 400 Scrap from India

Indian ship recycling and refinery maintenance generate Monel 400 that domestic users cannot always absorb. For export, each 400 lot is weighed and listed as Monel 400, N04400 on both invoice and packing list, then bagged or drummed and loaded into containers. Buyers for nickel-copper scrap sit in East Asia and Europe, and our South Korea and UAE offices work with buyers and suppliers in those regions. See alloy scrap export documents.

Customs heading: 7503.00 (nickel waste and scrap). The HS code is the international tariff heading the scrap is declared under; national tariff lines add further digits, so confirm the full line with your customs broker.

Monel 400 Scrap FAQ

Is Monel 400 magnetic?

Only slightly, and not consistently. Its Curie point sits near room temperature, so a magnet may catch a piece in a cold store and slide off the same piece on a hot day. A magnet is therefore no use for proving a lot is Monel 400; a chemical reading of nickel, copper and aluminium is.

Why does copper not count against Monel 400 scrap the way it does for Inconel?

Because copper is part of the specification. For a nickel-copper melter, the 31.5% copper in 400 is useful metal. It only becomes a penalty when Monel is sold into a nickel-chromium melt, which is why 400 should never be mixed into Inconel or stainless lots.

Can cupronickel be sold in a Monel 400 lot?

No. 70/30 and 90/10 cupronickel are copper-base alloys and trade as copper scrap. If they are found in a Monel 400 lot, the buyer either re-sorts it at your cost or prices the whole lot down. Check nickel against copper on every condenser tube bundle.

How is Monel 400 scrap told apart from Monel K-500?

Read the aluminium. On K-500 it sits near 2.7%, with titanium near 0.6%, while 400 shows only traces of both. Ordinary handheld XRF struggles with aluminium, so use a light-element XRF or OES. Part type is a hint: shafts and springs are usually K-500. Compare them on Monel 400 vs K-500.

Does Mipra Steel deal in Monel 400 turnings and HF-unit parts?

Yes, Mipra Steel buys and sells both, kept apart. Turnings should be single-grade and drained. Parts from hydrofluoric acid units need the plant's decontamination clearance before anyone will handle them. Send weights, photographs and the location to start.

Which HS code covers Monel 400 scrap?

Nickel is the larger metal by weight, so customs entries for Monel 400 scrap typically use 7503.00 (nickel waste and scrap) rather than a copper heading. Ask your broker to fix the exact eight-digit line.

Do you ship Monel 400 scrap out of India?

Yes. Mipra Steel ships described 400 lots from India and has offices in South Korea and Dubai. Send the tonnage, forms and destination, and we will come back with next steps.

What is Monel 400 made of?

Nominally 66% nickel, 31.5% copper, 1.5% iron, 1% manganese. Specification ranges vary by product form and standard.
