What Kind of Alloy Is René 77, and What Makes Its Scrap Different?

René 77 belongs to the older, simpler generation of turbine superalloys. It gets its strength from aluminium and titanium, which together form about 7.6% of the alloy and precipitate as gamma prime, backed by cobalt and molybdenum in the matrix. There is no tungsten, tantalum, niobium or hafnium in the nominal analysis. That short element list is the first thing to understand about its scrap: the value sits in nickel, cobalt and molybdenum, not in refractory metals.

Its chemistry is close to Udimet 700, which is why the two names appear side by side in older specifications and in scrap lists. Casting foundries pour René 77 as a vacuum-melted investment alloy, and it has also been forged. In service that means two very different shapes of scrap: thin turbine blades and heavy one-piece wheels or integral rotors, where blades and disc are a single casting.

Wheels and rotors change the economics of a lot. A single wheel can weigh many times more than a box of blades, carries no ceramic core, and usually has only light coating, if any. The difficulty is that a wheel is rarely stamped with its alloy, so a seller needs readings, a drawing number or an overhaul record to sell it as René 77 rather than as a generic cobalt-bearing superalloy.

Enquiries spell it René 77, Rene 77 or R77. The designation is GE's. Other cobalt-bearing grades of the same era, such as Udimet 500, are covered on our superalloy scrap page.

René 77 belongs to the René family, part of superalloy scrap.

Which Parts Become René 77 Scrap?

René 77 scrap comes from rotating hardware in aero and industrial turbines and from the foundries that cast it.

Turbine Wheels and Integral Rotors

One-piece cast wheels removed from smaller turbines and auxiliary units at overhaul or retirement. Heavy, dense and usually uncoated.

Turbine Blades

Blades replaced at overhaul, often coated, with tip wear or oxidation on the airfoil.

Foundry Revert

Gates, risers and rejected wheel or blade castings, which come with heat records and no service contamination.

Wrought Material

Forging offcuts and machining turnings from wrought René 77 parts, traded separately from cast material because of their form.

Retired Engines

Whole hot-section modules from aero and industrial fleets, where René 77 parts have to be pulled out from other alloys.

How René 77 Scrap Is Identified

René 77 is identified as much by what is missing from the reading as by what is present.

CheckWhat it shows for René 77
No tungsten or tantalumA clean René 77 reading shows neither. Several percent of tungsten means a different blade alloy, or a mixed lot.
Cobalt near 15%Sits between the roughly 10% of René 80 or René 125 and the 18 to 19% of Udimet 500 and the IN-939 type vane alloys.
Molybdenum near 4.2% with chromium near 14.6%A high molybdenum figure with mid-level chromium is characteristic. Udimet 500 has similar molybdenum but about 18% chromium.
Aluminium and titaniumAbout 4.3% and 3.3%. Aluminium needs OES or a light-element XRF method to read with confidence.
Part type and markingsWheel drawing numbers, engine model and overhaul records carry more weight than chemistry when a buyer must choose between René 77 and Udimet 700.
Surface preparationGrind through coating or oxide on blades before reading; heavy wheel hubs can be read on a clean machined face. See PMI testing.

Grades Most Often Confused with René 77

  • Udimet 500: about 18.5% cobalt and 18% chromium, with lower aluminium (2.9%) and titanium (2.9%).
  • René 80: about 9.5% cobalt, 5% titanium and 4% tungsten, so tungsten alone separates it.
  • Inconel 713C: no cobalt, about 12.5% chromium, 6.1% aluminium and 2% niobium.

Preparing René 77 Scrap for Sale

  1. Remove bolts, nuts, retaining rings and seals from wheels before weighing.
  2. Keep wheels, blades and foundry revert in separate packages.
  3. Read one clean spot on every wheel and write the result on the part with paint marker.
  4. Pull out any blades that show tungsten and pack them as a different alloy.
  5. Keep turnings from wrought parts dry, drained and in their own drums.

René 77 Scrap Price per Kg: What Decides It

With no refractory metals beyond molybdenum, a René 77 scrap price per kg rests on a few clear factors.

  • Cobalt at about 15%, which is the main premium over plain nickel-chromium scrap.
  • Molybdenum at about 4.2% and the nickel base, around 58.6%.
  • Form: heavy wheels and solid revert are easy to handle and melt; turnings from wrought parts are worth less because of oil and oxide.
  • Separation from tungsten-bearing blade alloys pulled from the same engine, which a melter of René 77 type alloys cannot accept.
  • Evidence for the description: drawing numbers, overhaul records or readings on each wheel.
  • Coatings, braze repairs and attached hardware such as bolts or retaining rings, all deducted or removed.

René 77 Scrap Import and Export

Importing René 77 Scrap into India

Most René 77 that reaches India arrives inside mixed turbine scrap from overhaul centres in Europe, the Gulf and East Asia, so the first task is making sure wheels and blades are packed and declared separately from other alloys. Imported metal scrap is inspected before shipment, and the consignment carries a pre-shipment inspection certificate, commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading. Heavy wheels travel well loose in containers or on pallets; blades go in drums. Usual ports are Nhava Sheva, Mundra and Chennai. Read the guide to importing nickel alloy scrap.

Exporting René 77 Scrap from India

From India, René 77 lots go out described by grade and form on the invoice and packing list, weighed, with wheels palletised or loose and blades in drums inside containers from Nhava Sheva or Mundra. Buyers are melters and revert traders in Europe and East Asia, and our offices in Dubai and South Korea help with UAE and Korean buyers. See export paperwork for alloy scrap.

René 77 Scrap FAQ

Is René 77 the same alloy as Udimet 700?

They are close in composition, which is why both names appear in similar applications, but they are separate designations. Udimet 700 is usually quoted with more cobalt, around 18.5%, against about 15% for René 77. A lot should be described from records where possible, with readings as support.

Does René 77 scrap contain tungsten?

No, not in its nominal chemistry. René 77 carries cobalt, chromium, molybdenum, aluminium and titanium with a nickel base. A reading with several percent tungsten means the part is another alloy, such as René 80, or the lot is mixed.

Can a whole René 77 turbine wheel be sold as scrap?

Yes. Whole wheels and integral rotors are sold by weight once attached hardware is removed. Buyers want photographs, the engine or turbine model, and a reading on a clean face, since wheels are not always stamped with the alloy.

Why is René 77 scrap valued differently from René 80?

Both carry nickel and cobalt, but René 77 has more cobalt (about 15% against 9.5%) and no tungsten, while René 80 carries 4% tungsten and more titanium. The two suit different melts, so mixing them lowers what either can fetch.

What is the density of René 77?

About 7.91 g/cm³. That is lighter than many tungsten-bearing blade alloys, which helps when estimating the weight of large wheels from their dimensions, though a weighbridge figure is always what the lot is traded on.

What tariff code is used for René 77 scrap?

Being a nickel-base alloy, René 77 scrap is typically declared under HS 7503.00, which covers nickel waste and scrap. The full national code varies by country, so confirm it with your customs broker.

Will Mipra Steel look at a single René 77 wheel?

Yes. A single wheel, a set of blades or a container of revert can all be discussed. Share the weight, photographs, location and any readings, and say whether the part is cast or wrought if you know.

What is René 77 made of?

Nominally 58.6% nickel, 15% cobalt, 14.6% chromium, 4.3% aluminium, 4.2% molybdenum, 3.3% titanium. Specification ranges vary by product form and standard.
