Marine Nickel Alloy Scrap

Source industry

Quick Answer

Ships and offshore vessels use Monel 400 and K-500, super duplex, 254 SMO and Ni-Resist for seawater systems, shafts and pumps. Ship recycling and refits release this material, often mixed with copper alloys and stainless steel.

Background

Why Marine and Shipbuilding Uses Nickel Alloys

Seawater corrodes most metals, especially in fast-flowing pumps and at propeller shafts. Nickel-copper Monel, super duplex and Ni-Resist castings are chosen because they resist seawater pitting and erosion.

Scrap comes from ship recycling, dry-dock refits and replacement of pumps, valves and shafts.

Standards

Standards Behind This Scrap

Seawater systems use Monel, 625, duplex and 254 SMO made to ASTM specifications: B127 and B164 for Monel 400, B865 for K-500, A790 for duplex pipe and A240 for plate. US naval supply also uses federal specifications such as QQ-N-281 for Monel 400 and QQ-N-286 for K-500.

Things to Know

Note

Marine scrap is often mixed with cupronickel and bronze, which are copper-base alloys and must be kept out of nickel alloy lots.

Questions

FAQ

Is cupronickel from ships a nickel alloy?

No. 90/10 and 70/30 cupronickels are copper-base and are sold as copper alloy scrap.

How is marine nickel alloy scrap separated from bronze?

By XRF. Bronze and cupronickel are copper-base, while Monel is nickel-base; the analyser separates them in seconds.
