Werkstoff Numbers
The W.Nr. system gives every material a numeric code. The first digit is the material group: 1 for steels, 2 for heavy non-ferrous metals including nickel and copper, 3 for light metals including titanium. Nickel alloys therefore start with 2.4, duplex and stainless steels with 1.4, and titanium with 3.7. European mill certificates and markings often quote the W.Nr. instead of, or next to, the UNS number.

DIN Chemical Designations
German standards also describe nickel alloys by chemistry, for example NiCr15Fe for alloy 600, NiCr22Mo9Nb for 625 and NiMo16Cr15W for C-276. The name lists the base metal and main alloying elements with their approximate content. It is a useful sense-check when a certificate uses only the chemical name.
British HR Aerospace Series
The Nimonic alloys were developed in Britain, and British aerospace buyers specify them to the HR series. For the grades we list:

|---|---|---|---|
| BS HR 1 | – | Rod and bar | Nimonic 80A |
| BS HR 5 | – | Rod, bar and forging stock | Nimonic 75 |
| BS HR 10 | – | Rod and bar | Nimonic C-263 |
| BS HR 201 | – | Plate, sheet and strip | Nimonic 80A |
| BS HR 203 | – | Plate, sheet and strip | Nimonic 75 |
| BS HR 206 | – | Plate, sheet and strip | Nimonic C-263 |
| BS HR 401 | – | Tube | Nimonic 80A |
| BS HR 403 | – | Tube | Nimonic 75 |

EN 10204 Inspection Documents
| Type | Document | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 2.1 | Declaration of compliance | The manufacturer states the product complies, without test results. |
| 2.2 | Test report | Includes results from non-specific inspection, not necessarily on the delivered heat. |
| 3.1 | Inspection certificate 3.1 | Results from specific inspection of the delivered product, validated by the manufacturer’s authorised inspection representative, independent of manufacturing. |
| 3.2 | Inspection certificate 3.2 | As 3.1, also validated by the purchaser’s representative or an inspector named in official regulations. |
For scrap, a 3.1 certificate that matches the heat number on the piece is the best supporting document a seller can offer. See how to read an EN 10204 3.1 certificate.
FAQ
What is the W.Nr. for Inconel 625?
2.4856, chemical designation NiCr22Mo9Nb.
What is the difference between EN 10204 3.1 and 3.2?
A 3.1 certificate is validated by the manufacturer’s independent inspection representative. A 3.2 is also validated by the purchaser’s representative or an official inspector.
Why do titanium W.Nr. numbers start with 3.7?
Group 3 in the Werkstoff system is light metals, and 3.7 is titanium: Grade 2 is 3.7035 and Grade 5 is 3.7165.
