Key takeaways
- Specify grade, UNS number, form, condition, identification method and packing in the contract, not just weight and price.
- Indian suppliers commonly offer Incoloy 825, Inconel 625 and 600, Hastelloy C-276, Monel 400, duplex and machining turnings.
- Make every supplier quote on the same Incoterm, and agree inspection scope and failure rules before loading.
- Nickel alloy scrap ships under HS 7503.00, duplex under 7204.21 and titanium under 8108.30; check your destination rules before you contract.
Buying from a nickel alloy scrap supplier in India makes sense for many melters and traders: the country has refining, petrochemical, fertiliser and power plants and precision machine shops, all of which throw off corrosion-resistant and heat-resistant alloy scrap. The difficulty is not finding material. It is making sure that what arrives at your port is the grade, form and weight you paid for.
This guide is for overseas buyers. It covers which grades are commonly offered, how a lot should be prepared, the Incoterms that work, what an inspection should cover and which documents to expect. If you are importing into India rather than buying from it, see importing metal scrap into India.
What Should You Expect from a Nickel Alloy Scrap Supplier in India?
Expect a lot described by grade, form and weight, backed by evidence you can check, and shipped with a complete export document set. A supplier who offers "nickel alloy mix" with no readings is selling uncertainty, and you will pay for it in the melt or in a dispute.
A workable offer from an Indian supplier normally contains:
- the trade name and UNS number of each grade, for example Incoloy 825, UNS N08825, not "Inconel 825";
- the form: solids, pipe, plate, bar ends, turnings or revert;
- approximate weight per grade and the loading location;
- photographs of the material as it sits, and readings or a sample result;
- the proposed Incoterm, port and payment terms.
If any of these is missing, ask before you talk about price. The procurement checklist lists the questions in a form you can send.
Which Nickel Alloy Scrap Grades Are Commonly Available from India?
Much of the nickel alloy scrap offered from India is corrosion-resistant grades from process plants, plus turnings from machine shops. Plant turnarounds, exchanger re-tubing and fabrication offcuts generate most of the solids; aerospace and precision machining generate turnings.
| Grade | UNS | Typical Indian source | Forms commonly offered |
|---|---|---|---|
| Incoloy 825 | N08825 | Refinery and fertiliser exchangers, piping | Pipe, tube, plate offcuts |
| Inconel 625 | N06625 | Petrochemical piping, clad fabrication | Pipe, plate, bar ends |
| Inconel 600 | N06600 | Furnace and heat-treatment rebuilds, chemical plant | Plate, tube, solids |
| Hastelloy C-276 | N10276 | Chemical and pharmaceutical plant shutdowns | Pipe, plate, fittings |
| Monel 400 | N04400 | Marine, hydrofluoric acid and seawater service | Pipe, bar, valve parts |
| Duplex 2205 and super duplex | S32205 / S32750 | Offshore, desalination, process piping | Pipe, plate |
| Inconel 718 and titanium Grade 5 | N07718 / R56400 | Precision and aerospace machining | 718 turnings, Ti-6Al-4V turnings |
The chemistry differences matter when you plan a charge. Incoloy 825 is iron-rich, at about 42% nickel and 30% iron, while Inconel 625 carries about 62% nickel with 9% molybdenum and 3.6% niobium. A buyer who confuses the two, or lets a supplier do so, ends up with the wrong furnace chemistry.
Nominal values from the grade pages; specification limits vary by product form.
For the families side by side, the Inconel vs Incoloy comparison shows why the trade names cause so much trouble, and high-nickel alloy scrap in India covers where each grade is generated.
How Should an Indian Lot Be Prepared for Export?
An export lot should be sorted to one grade per package, cleaned, cut to fit the container, packed in labelled bags, drums or stillages, and weighed package by package. Preparation is cheapest at the supplier's floor and most expensive at your gate.
- One grade per packageno mixing, even of similar alloys such as 600 and 625
- Stencils keptheat numbers and markings left visible where they survive
- Attachments removedgaskets, insulation, plastics, carbon-steel flanges and bolts
- Open and emptypipe ends cut open, vessels drained, no sealed items
- Dry and oil-freeturnings drained and dried, no coolant pooling in drums
- Cut to fitlengths that stow in a 20-foot container without voids
- Labelled and weighedgrade, package number and net weight on each package
Turnings need their own discussion. Chips from a flange shop machining 625 are worth less than solids of the same grade because of oil, moisture, fines and the risk of mixed chips, and solids vs turnings explains how drying and segregation close part of that gap. If you buy turnings, agree the moisture and oil condition in writing. The scrap preparation guide sets out form-by-form preparation.
How Is the Grade Proved Before You Pay?
The grade is proved with handheld XRF readings on every solid piece, and with sampling and a composite analysis for turnings. Mill certificates add weight only when the pieces can still be traced to the heat number on the certificate.
Ask the supplier for a reading sheet, not a summary. Each line should show the package number, the piece or sample, the main elements and the grade called. For superalloys and grades where light elements decide the call, XRF may not be enough, and XRF, OES or lab analysis explains when to ask for spark OES or a laboratory result instead.
Set the acceptance rule before shipment: what reading range counts as the declared grade, how many pieces are checked, and who analyses a disputed sample. The PMI inspection checklist is a useful template for what the record should contain.
Which Incoterms Work for Scrap from India?
Most nickel alloy scrap from India trades FOB at the Indian port of loading or CFR/CIF to the buyer's port. Offers on different terms cannot be compared directly, so make every supplier quote on the same basis.
| FOB Indian port | CFR destination port | CIF destination port | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Packing and loading in India | Seller | Seller | Seller |
| Indian export clearance | Seller | Seller | Seller |
| Sea freight | Buyer | Seller | Seller |
| Marine insurance | Buyer | Buyer | Seller |
| Unloading and import clearance | Buyer | Buyer | Buyer |
● yes ◐ partly ○ no
Under FOB you control the shipping line and the schedule, which suits buyers with regular freight contracts out of Nhava Sheva or Mundra. Under CFR or CIF the seller books the vessel, which is simpler for occasional buyers but leaves the routing and transit time in the seller's hands. Whatever the term, state the version of the Incoterms rules, the named port, the price basis and how weights and grade will be checked on arrival.
What Should a Pre-Shipment Inspection Cover?
A pre-shipment inspection should witness weighing, grade identification and container loading, and record each with photographs and signed sheets. Many overseas buyers appoint an independent inspector for this, and the scope belongs in the contract.
- Does a solid piece read outside the declared grade?Yesset it aside, re-weigh the package and amend the packing list
- Does a turnings composite fall outside the agreed range?Yeshold the drums and refer the sample to the agreed laboratory
- Do package weights differ from the packing list?Yesre-weigh on the agreed weighbridge before sealing
- Are there sealed items, oil or attachments?Yesremove or reject them before stuffing
- Everything matches: load, photograph, seal and record the seal number
Agree the sample size in advance. Every solid piece is practical for high-value grades such as Hastelloy C-276; for a container of bar ends, an agreed percentage per package may be enough. Agree, too, who pays for re-testing when a piece fails, and whether failed pieces are replaced, re-priced or removed from the lot.
How Are Weights and Payment Settled on an Export Lot?
Weights are usually settled on the loading weighbridge in India, with the destination weighbridge as a check, and payment is tied to documents rather than to arrival. Agree both before the container is stuffed, because these are the two places where buyer and seller most often disagree after the fact.
Weights
Ask for three figures that should agree: the sum of the package weights on the packing list, the net weight on the invoice, and the weighbridge ticket for the loaded container less the tare. If the destination weighbridge reads differently, the contract should say what tolerance is accepted and whose figure decides beyond it. Wet turnings are the usual culprit: water that drains out on a long voyage shows up as a shortfall on arrival.
Payment
Export scrap is commonly paid by an advance with the balance against copies of the shipping documents, or by letter of credit for larger or first-time trades. Whatever the method, link payment to documents you can check: the bill of lading, the packing list, the reading sheet and the inspection report if you appointed an inspector. Do not release a balance against a bill of lading alone when grade is the main risk.
Warning Signs in an Offer from a New Supplier
An offer that cannot be checked is the main warning sign. Grade names without UNS numbers, a single photograph of a heap, or "XRF available on request" with no reading sheet all leave the risk with you.
- Trade names used loosely. "Inconel 825" or "Hastelloy" with no grade usually means the seller has not identified the material.
- One price for several grades. Incoloy 825 and Hastelloy C-276 carry very different molybdenum and nickel, so a single figure for both suggests a mixed lot.
- No package-level weights. Without them, nobody can trace a disputed piece back to a bag or stillage.
- Reluctance to allow inspection. A supplier with sorted, documented material has little reason to refuse a witness at loading.
None of these proves a problem, but each is a reason to ask more before you commit funds.
Which Documents Come with a Shipment from India?
An export shipment from India normally carries a commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, a radiation-free certificate where the destination requires one, and the identification record you agreed.
| Document | Why it matters to you |
|---|---|
| Commercial invoice and packing list | Weights per package and per grade |
| Bill of lading | Title and shipping record |
| Certificate of origin | Customs treatment at destination |
| Radiation-free certificate | Required by many importing countries for metal scrap |
| Identification record (XRF or lab) | Proves grade by piece or by sample |
| Photographs of the loaded container | Evidence of packing and condition |
Nickel alloy scrap ships under HS 7503.00, duplex and stainless under 7204.21 and titanium under 8108.30. National tariff lines add digits. How each paper should be filled in so they all agree is covered in scrap export documents.
Destination Rules to Check Before You Contract
Check your own country's import rules for scrap before you sign, because the destination decides what extra paperwork the shipment needs. Indian nickel alloy scrap is shipped to melters and traders in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Europe and North America, and the rules differ, particularly where waste shipment regulations apply.
Ask your customs broker which tariff line applies, whether a radiation certificate or pre-shipment inspection is required, and whether scrap needs any prior notification or licence at your end. Rules change, so check the current requirements before every new trade lane.

What HS code is used for nickel alloy scrap exported from India?
Nickel alloy scrap is exported under HS 7503.00, nickel waste and scrap. Duplex and other stainless scrap use 7204.21, and titanium scrap 8108.30. These six-digit headings are harmonised internationally, but each country adds its own tariff digits, so confirm the full line at your end with your customs broker before the contract is signed.
Can scrap be inspected before loading in India?
Yes. Overseas buyers commonly appoint an inspection agency to witness testing, weighing and container loading in India. Agree the scope in the contract: how many pieces or samples are checked, which instrument is used, what happens to a piece that fails and who pays for re-testing. The inspector should photograph the loaded container and record the seal number.
Which grades are commonly offered by Indian suppliers?
Incoloy 825, Inconel 625 and 600, Hastelloy C-276, Monel 400, duplex and super duplex are commonly offered as pipe, plate and offcuts from process plants. Machine shops add Inconel 718 and titanium Grade 5 turnings. Availability changes with plant shutdown schedules, so ask suppliers what they hold now rather than relying on a standing list.
What documents come with an export shipment?
A commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading and certificate of origin, plus a radiation-free certificate where the destination requires one and the identification record agreed with the buyer, such as an XRF reading sheet or lab analysis. Photographs of the loaded container are also worth asking for, because they record packing and condition at the point of loading.
Should I buy Indian nickel alloy scrap FOB or CIF?
Buy FOB if you have your own freight arrangements and want control over the vessel, routing and timing. Buy CFR or CIF if you ship occasionally and prefer the seller to book the freight. Under CIF the seller also arranges marine insurance. Ask every supplier to quote on the same Incoterm so the offers can be compared.
How do I avoid receiving mixed grades from an overseas supplier?
Specify one grade per package in the contract, ask for a piece-by-piece reading sheet linked to package numbers, and appoint an inspector to witness identification and loading if the lot is valuable. Set a clear acceptance rule and dispute method before shipment, so an off-grade piece found on arrival has an agreed consequence.
What minimum quantity is normal for nickel alloy scrap from India?
There is no fixed minimum, but most export lots are sized around a full container, because freight and documentation cost roughly the same whether the container is full or not. Dense solids can reach the container payload limit before the box looks full. Smaller lots of high-value grades are sometimes shipped consolidated with other material.
